Floating fish-cage village
Floating fish-cage village
In Chau Doc in the southern province of An Giang, 245km from Ho Chi Minh City and very close to the Cambodian border, tourists can travel on the river to explore the life of those who live on the water by visiting floating fish farms and villages.
The most interesting places to visit are the temples and mosques. These vary in style according to the ethnic community to which they belong. Tourists will also see many families living in floating houses that have metal fish cages underneath. The fish grow quickly in their natural river environment and provide a handy source of food for the household as well as an income.
In the floating village, tourists can get a chance to see fishermen at work catching fish with their nets. It is very dangerous work. Some fishermen without any breathing aids jump into the water through a small hole to cast their nets.
Crossing the Mekong border is a wonderful way to enter Vietnam, and a Chau Doc visit is sure to be one of your Vietnam highlights.
